Beware of Vitamin D Deficiency!

The weather is absolutely gorgeous lately; it's the type of day that makes you want to ditch everything, find the nearest park, and just lie in the grass with a simple picnic of bread and cheese and grape juice (random I know, but I'm craving it at the moment), along with a gripping novel that you can enjoy for hours while soaking in the sun. If only we weren't burdened with the responsibility of having to work in an office all week to make a living...

Daydreaming aside, it's actually quite important to fulfill your daily intake of sunlight. And by this, I'm specifically referring to the vitamin D that sunlight helps us absorb. Now if your levels are below 20 ng/ml, then it means you have a deficiency. Sadly, most Koreans (93.3% of women, 86.8% of men) have a vitamin D deficiency, which is 9 times more than the statistics from 5 years ago. What!!! ...well, on second thought actually, it's not so surprising. We spend most of our time indoors, finish work after the sun has gone down, and prefer not to tan. In fact, we probably use more sunscreen than most other people, in order to main translucent, youthful, milk-white, pearly perfect skin. Although UV protection is definitely required, sometimes we can take it too far and keep away the good components of sunlight as well. Which might not be such a good thing.

How so? Let's take a look at what can go wrong if you have a vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D helps our bones absorb necessary calcium and nutrients - it's a crucial factor for maintaining healthy bones. The most common result of a vitamin D deficiency is osteoporosis, a condition in which your bones become weak and brittle, and therefore more susceptible to serious injury/fracture. This doesn't just apply to older people - plenty of people in their twenties and thirties can have the same condition, more so when an unhealthy diet or extreme weight loss accompanies the vitamin D deficiency.

Another condition related to weaker bones is rickets, which is found more often in children. Rickets can cause pain in the spine, growth delay, and skeletal deformities. It may be additionally caused by muscle weakness, fatigue, chronic pain, depression etc.

Vitamin D deficiencies can also increase the risk of atopic dermatitis in children. Though other factors come into play, children who live in the countryside and are exposed more to sunlight suffer less from dermatitis than those who live in the city.

More problems that can occur from vitamin D deficiency include cardiovascular disorders, metabolic diseases, and premature birth. Furthermore, vitamin D levels under 20 ng/ml can mean 30-50% higher risk of getting breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.

Yeah. Better go buy some vitamin supplements, right? On the bright side, a sufficient intake of vitamin D, besides preventing all the problems mentioned above, can strengthen your immune system, as well as help treat psoriasis, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis.

What are some other measures we can take to prevent vitamin D deficiency?

The obvious thing to do, of course, would be to spend more time in the sun. Try taking a walk 2 or 3 times a week - you'll find that this can lift your spirits as well. Everyone needs a little more sunshine in their lives. ^_^
Certain foods, such as mackerel, salmon, eggs, milk and mushrooms might help, but foods generally contain/produce very little vitamin D.
Another option you might want to consider is taking vitamin D supplements or injections. This is a particularly recommended treatment for patients who regularly receive skin treatments. Many laser treatments require patients to avoid sunlight as much as possible as to prevent further pigmentation or to increase the effects of treatment. Therefore, a simple injection on the butt might make up for all that missed sunlight. Injections are required once every three months - just a few days after this injection you'll find yourself more energized. Try for yourself, and experience the wonders of vitamin D!

Some extra tips you might want to keep in mind:
-Obesity can also be cause of vitamin D deficiency, since fat absorbs and restricts vitamin D.
-Oral antifungal drugs and anticonvulsants can also reduce vitamin D, so if you're taking such medications, you might want to take some vitamin supplements as well.

Folliculitis - What You Need To Know

Folliculitis is a common skin condition that can easily be mistaken for acne at first glance. It might be best to have some information in mind, as to not get confused when you notice breakouts across your skin in the future! If you do notice anything strange, always remember that it is best to consult your doctor first for diagnosis before trying any remedies at home. In the meantime, let's get you educated on what exactly folliculitis is.

As the name might suggest, folliculitis is an infection in the follicles. And what are follicles? Why, I'm glad you asked. Follicles refer to the tiny little pouches from which each hair grows out. They exist all over the body on any area that has hair... and that includes your chest, back, legs, arms, and even your butt. These follicles can become infected by a virus or the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, and depending on the depth and severity of the infection requires light treatment or a visit to the doctor.

So how do you get folliculitis? There are a variety of causes that can contribute to infection, some of which include tight clothes, friction, prolonged acne medication, diabetes, obesity, unhygienic environments, nose hair plucking (so be careful when you pick your nose, haha), or other infected wounds that can affect surrounding follicles. Typically they start off looking like little red pimples and are painless, or perhaps slightly itchy, and don't leave behind any scars. On the other hand, there are also severe cases of folliculitis, normally in the beard area, in which symptoms can frequently recur and spread to other follicles.

Treatment is fairly simple, and is done via topical antibiotics for about 7-10 days. In cases of relapse or excessively wide treatment areas, or when the skin does not respond well to treatment, oral medication will be additionally prescribed.

So many things to watch out for when taking care of your skin, huh? Well, I hope this extra bit of information helps, anyway!

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatment in Seoul Korea

Dr. Kim Duk Han MD
If you're looking for a mild, simple laser for treating pigmentation or to improve general skin tone, IPL might be just what you need. With no pain or downtime, this is a popular procedure that can leave your face clearer and brighter.

IPL (standing for Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment stronger than previous lasers, that can selectively target pigmentation. If most lasers use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a combination of wavelengths and can therefore reach different parts/layers of the skin, simultaneously treating more than one type of lesion/pigmentation. It is used for a variety of purposes, including permanent hair removal, vascular treatment, phototherapy, and so forth. IPL is an increasingly popular treatment option all over the world, and its safety has already been approved by the FDA US.  The best part? This treatment is virtually painless and has no downtime.

What are its effects?
The biggest advantage of IPL might be its ability to treat several conditions at once, unlike other lasers that can only use one wavelength. For example, if you had vascular lesions, pigmentation, and fine lines, you would have previously needed three different laser treatments. With IPL, however, you can target all of these in one session, improving your general skin condition and tone. The effects are gradual and natural - you'll have great skin, but your friends won't even realize that you actually had something done!

Indications for IPL:
-Skin pigmentation
-Vascular conditions
-Large pores, acne scars
-Aging skin, wrinkles
-Under eye dark circles
-Hair removal

Here are also some guidelines and tips to read before treatment:
1. If you are taking any medications, inform the doctor beforehand.
2. Don't rub the treatment area for a few days.
3. Pigmentation may appear darker for a few days. They will lighten eventually!
4. Avoid/protect yourself from UVA rays several days before and after treatment.
5. Treatment is usually conducted every 4 weeks.
6. Results are not instant with IPL - it's important to have patience!
7. Keep yourself moisturized to further rejuvenate skin - the treatment may cause temporary dryness.
8. If you experience any heat flashes or swelling, use a cold pack.
9. Avoid excessive exercise for about 2 weeks.

Stop by our clinic and consult our doctor to see whether this might be the treatment you need!

How to Select Proper Cosmetic Products for Your Skin

The trends in selecting foods and products have shifted considerably over the years. People are increasingly looking for items that are healthier and free of artificial/chemical ingredients. Detoxification is the new big thing. And especially with the overflow of information on the internet, these days we are constantly bombarded with tips for being healthier, cleaner, more organic.

Cosmetic products are no exception. If you have even the slightest knowledge of beauty products in Korea, you will know that there is an endless supply of products to choose from, the majority available at quite affordable prices. It may be overwhelming; how can you know which one is good for you?

Now, a lot of folks would tend toward cosmetics with labels such as "hypoallergenic" or "organic" or basically anything that suggests that the product is gentler and well suited for sensitive skin. However, just because it's labeled that way does not mean that you should select it without thinking. It's actually more important to know which ingredients are suitable for your own skin type, and to choose a product accordingly. Here are some guidelines provided by the Association of Korean Dermatologists:

  • Oily skin types should avoid products that contain triglycerides, palmitic acid, coconut oil etc.
  • Dry skin types should avoid ingredients such as alcohol, surfactants, menthol, and peppermint.
  • Sensitive skin types should avoid products with alcohol, surfactants, AHA, BHA, oxybenzone etc.

You should also be careful when using cosmetics that boast "all natural ingredients" - since they are also free of preservatives, they can easily change or go bad.

In any case, take a careful look at the full list of ingredients before making any purchases. If a product includes any one particular substance that is not compatible with your skin, you will most likely break out or develop dermatitis. Many patients also make the problem worse by mistaking this dermatitis for acne, thinking the skin trouble is caused from not washing frequently enough. The best solution, as always, is to consult a dermatologist if you feel that a product is causing breakouts.

If I may suggest one more thing, don't try out several different products at once. If you happen to breakout, you won't be able to figure which one is causing the problem.

Good luck!

Gilbert's Burger & Fries in Gangnam

Who loves a good burger? ME!!! I am always on the hunt for a good juicy burger... though to be honest, I love McDonald's and Burger King just as much!

Today we ventured out a little further from our usual boundaries and checked out a burger joint called Gilbert's Burger and Fries. This place also has a chain at Garosugil, so if you're closer to that area you can go there instead.

At first glance, the place hardly looks like a restaurant if not for the tables and chairs set outside. The sign is very minimalist and actually a bit hard to miss. Plus, it's located in an alleyway that barely has any other restaurants nearby, just a cafe or two. However, one step inside and you're in for a cozy, Western-like atmosphere.

All the drinks here seem to be imported - I couldn't see any Korean brands.
If you visit during lunch hour, you can get a pretty good deal - a junior burger, with fries and a drink for only 12,000 won! Take a look at the menu too (if you can read Korean).

Milkshakes and floats? Aweeeesome! That's definitely not something commonly found in burger joints in Korea. To be honest, I'd never tried a float before and was excited to try one, but I thought the food would be filling enough and opted for a simple Dr. Pepper instead. Definitely next time, though!

Cute ketchup bottle, thought I'd just squeeze in a shot for fun.
But enough of all these useless photos. You want to see the main dish, right? So the menu we ordered was "Mr. President" (patty, sharp cheddar cheese, red onion, dill pickle, tomato, romaine lettuce, bacon, horseradish-mustard-mayonnaise) and "Sunrise" (patty, pimento cheese, tomato, romaine lettuce, bacon), with a side of cheese fries and onion rings. YUM! Are you ready?

The size was not so big that it was impossible to eat with your hands, although it did get a little sloppy. The Mr. President had a lot more toppings (and too much onion in my opinion) but was definitely more filling than Sunrise, which was delicious but lacking in something I couldn't quite place. Both were awesome, and the fries and onion rings were superb!

Am I going to come back to try the other menus? Absolutely! I cannot wait to try out the milkshakes and floats as well. Perhaps I will update this blog once I do! :)

Treatment for Athlete's Foot in Seoul Korea

Athlete's foot is the most common type of fungal infection in Korea. It makes up 33-40% of all cases of mycosis, typically in adult patients in their twenties to forties. That being said, it's good to know the general causes and symptoms in order to prevent catching it yourself.

Simply put, athlete's foot is an infection caused by the fungi trichophyton, normally on the soles of the feet and between the toes. Fungi thrive in warm, damp, and moist environments, which make sweaty feet and hands the perfect hideout. They settle in the outer layers of the epidermis, where sweat glucose actually serves as nutrients for the bacteria.

So what causes athlete's foot? There may be several factors behind fungal infection, but sweaty feet/hands serve as the biggest cause. Tight shoes or socks that cause sweat, or not drying thoroughly after swimming or showering can be other reasons. Symptoms include itchiness, hardened skin, flakiness/scaliness, weakened nails, and in severe cases, pain. Athlete's foot not only easily spreads across the body; it can be transmitted to other people as well. You can get it by something as simple as touching the foot of someone who has athlete's foot, or even from the flakes/scales that fall off. However, exposure doesn't always mean transmission, so you don't need to treat it like a plague. Just be careful!

Now let's take a look at some treatment options available at Renewme Skin Clinic.

1. Treatment for Acute Inflammation
For acute or secondary inflammation, a wet compress and antibiotics/anti-inflammatory ointments are recommended before moving on to antifungal medication. However, this should be conducted under a doctor's supervision, because improper use of anti-inflammatory ointment can actually worsen the condition.

2. Antifungal Medication
About one week after antifungal cream is applied to the treatment area, it may seem like your skin has recovered to some extent. However, the fungi has most likely penetrated deep into your skin and is waiting to relapse. For full recovery, cream application is recommended for at least 6 weeks. If topical treatment is not working, the doctor will prescribe oral medication which should be taken regularly.

High Quality Naengmyun (Cold Noodles) In Gangnam, Seoul

Let's jump right into it! There's a restaurant just 3 minutes from Nambu Bus Terminal Station (Renewme Skin Clinic Seocho Branch) called "Naju Gomtang." Naju is the name of a city famous for gomtang, a type of Korean soup with chunks of beef and a hearty, rich broth. So naturally, you can guess the main dish served at this restaurant. Other than traditional gomtang, however, the place also serves various dishes that require a delicious beef broth, such as dumpling soup. A limited-time menu is naengmyeon (cold noodles), which is only available in the summer. We pounced on it as soon as it was available!

Walk straight down from Nambu Terminal Station exit 6 until you see this sign!

By 12 o'clock noon, the typical lunchtime for most office workers around the area, this place was completely packed. Luckily, I arrived 15 minutes early to save a spot for myself and my coworkers.

Kimchi, to many Koreans, is the most important side dish to any meal. You can have a whole feast in front of you, and it won't be complete without some good kimchi. This place has two types of kimchi, available in small pots. Separate side dish plates are provided so you can control your portions.

And now for the main dishes, mulnaengmyeon (naengmyeon with watery broth) and bibimnaengmyeon (mixed - no broth, just sauce)! Cost: 7,000 won per bowl.

If I may make a very important point; there are plenty of naengmyeon restaurants in Korea. It's quite a popular dish. However, there are not many that make good quality naengmyeon. Many places (usually the cheaper) use ready-made broth that has more artificial seasonings than flavor from actual beef. It's savory and addicting, and to be honest, I prefer the cheap type. :P However, this naengmyeon uses real broth and you can taste the quality with each noodle, or spoonful of broth. It's cool and refreshing, and doesn't leave a weird sweet sensation in your mouth after (as it does with the low quality broths). I would suggest you come here to taste the real deal!

And as a side dish, we ordered some steamed dumplings, which are also quite popular at this restaurant.

Now, I'm a sucker for dumplings. Give me any steamed dumpling (preferably buns) and I'll devour it like there was no tomorrow. However, these ones were exceptionally good. I really can't explain it, you just need to try it for yourself! It's the perfect dish to accompany your noodles; a combination of hot and cold.

How to Fix a Weak or Short Chin in Seoul Korea

A strong and prominent chin can do a lot for a person's appearance. Some recent studies have shown that ovulating women tend to find stronger chins/jaws more attractive; and although of course we can't be 100% sure, we generally associate this particular feature with masculinity. However, this doesn't just apply to men, people. If you think about it, we all strive for sharp and well defined features because it gives off a reassuring and trustworthy impression. Why else would all those ladies emphasize contouring in their makeup tutorials?

Anyway, let's talk about short chins today, and how to fix them to get that defined face we want. What exactly is a short chin? To check if you've got one yourself, take a straight object (such as a ruler or pen) and connect the tip of your nose to your mouth. Where do you find the end of your chin? If it lies under the line, then boom, you've got a short chin.

I've also met with quite a few patients who had come to consult about double chins but ending up realizing that the problem actually lies within the short chin. Augmenting the chin can tighten and pull on the skin that constitutes the double chin - this is the procedure you might want to consider first before turning towards options such as liposuction or fat dissolving treatments.

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure provided by plastic surgery clinics, in which an artificial implant is inserted into the chin for permanent results. However, if you're looking for something that's non-invasive and not permanent, a dermal filler injection will do the job. Here is a testimonial by Dr. Kim Joong Keun, dermatologist and director of Renewme Skin Clinic Dongdaemun.

These days on television, we can see celebrities openly talking about their cosmetic procedures, one in particular being the chin filler. As a result, nowadays more and more patients come to me curious about the effects of the chin filler. To better understand the effects, and for a more precise consultation, I decided to receive the chin filler myself.

As you can see, here my chin is relatively small and my jaw line is not very prominent. This makes my mouth look like it is protruding. For patients with a similar oral structure, the chin filler is highly recommended.

The chin filler procedure is easy and fast. After applying anesthetic cream, the injection itself was painless. The procedure lasted for about 30 minutes and I was able to go back to my routine without any recovery time.

This photo was taken a week after the chin filler. It is clear to see that my chin now has more volume and definition, and my mouth is not protruding as usual.
If you are concerned about the shape or size of your chin, a chin filler is a strongly recommended and safe option.

Rejuran Healer for Treating Neck Wrinkles in Korea

There are a few parts of the body that give away a person's age: mainly the hands, knees, and neck. These are places that are neglected to be taken care of compared to the face, and as our skin starts to lose elasticity, the wrinkles are simply unavoidable. Compared to other parts, however, there are actually some treatment options available for neck wrinkles.

Besides aging, other factors that contribute to neck wrinkles may include genetics, high pillows, and most importantly these days - the increased use in smartphones that keep us constantly looking down. Since the causes, skin type/condition, and age all differ among patients, it is strongly recommended that you consult a dermatologist first before deciding what treatments are best for your own neck wrinkles. After thorough examination, the doctor would suggest treatments such as fillers, thread lift, laser treatment, fat grafting, and so forth.

Rejuran is a recent treatment that has been receiving a lot of attention here in Korea (you can read more on it by clicking here). Simply put, it is a new type of dermal filler that subtly and naturally regenerates skin cells to improve wrinkles as well as general skin tone. Dr. Kwon Na Hyun of our Dongdaemun branch tried this injection on her neck wrinkles, and saw surprisingly good results.

BEFORE
AFTER
You will have to excuse the not-so-great photos, as they were taken with a phone and not in the same environment. But even at a cursory glance you can tell that the wrinkles in the neck are considerably less visible. The results would be even better if combined with other treatments, but one injection is still not bad at all.

So what do you think? If you're concerned about the deep lines running across your neck, you might want to consider an injection of Rejuran. Experience the results for yourself, and stop by for consultation today!

Common Medications Used for Skin Treatment

Drugs and medication used for dermatology/skin disorders have a reputation of being potent, and are actually avoided by a lot of patients here in Korea. There are a lot of false information and rumors about side effects going around regarding skin medication, that may be why patients shy away from prescriptions. True, there are some medications that can make you feel drowsy, but that also applies to pills for the flu or common cold. Medications for the skin are actually quite safe, and carefully selected by our dermatologists so that it will make your skin better and not worse.
Here are typical prescriptions you can expect from your dermatologist:

1. Antihistamines
Antihistamines block the receptors of histamine, therefore preventing the uncontrollable itchiness that occurs from dermatitis, hives, rashes etc. Some side effects might include drowsiness, thirst, or constipation, leading to the assumption that this medication is strong. However, antihistamines have been used by ENT doctors and internists for patients with various conditions such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. It is a safe medication that will not being any negative side effects even with prolonged consumption.

2. Steroids
Along with penicillin, steroids are considered one of the greatest discoveries in medicine to benefit mankind. It is used to treat various illnesses in many medical fields; in dermatology, it is an essential treatment for acute dermatitis.
The side effects of steroid use are largely overstated. The truth is that with the right prescription and dosage, steroids are quite effective and can be used even on newborn babies and pregnant women.

3. Antifungal Medication
In severe cases of athlete's foot or similar fungal infections, prescribed medications are required. In the past, such medication caused damage to the liver, causing preconceptions that are still prevalent today. However, recent antifungal medications are safe and effective for patients with healthy livers, if taken in the right amounts and time.

4. Acne Medication
Medicine for acne includes antibiotics and sebum control agents. Acne can occur in patients of all agents, which is why small amounts of antibiotics (less risk of developing tolerance) are generally prescribed.
If your skin shows no response to antibiotic treatment, sometimes sebum controlling medications are prescribed as well. If consumed during pregnancy, this medication can lead to possible fetal deformities and can be mistaken as strong. However, sebum control agents are common vitamin A derivatives that are free of side effects if prescribed correctly.
